Costume College 2019 Day 1
If you are unfamiliar with costuming or unaware of what Costume College is let me give you a rundown. It is a four-day convention (Thursday to Sunday) held at the Marriot in Woodland Hills and hosted by the Costumer Guild West. There are classes in various historical costuming related things held during the day and organized social gatherings during the evening. Thursday is kinda a wash day, it is when many people arrive and thus it is when registration for the event opens, there are no classes, but there is an evening social gathering known as the Thursday Night Pool Party because it is held by the hotel’s pool. The theme for this year’s pool party was “Garments of the Galaxy” so I cosplayed as the Romulan Commander for the Star Trek (original series) episode “The Enterprise Incident”. The pool party is a great way to mingle informally and it goes well into the evening. You get to meet a lot of cool people dressed rather quirky because the pool party theme always is interpreted more “fantasy” than other events during the convention are.
This was my first time working with spandex and I was very pleased I think it turned out great. I made the uniform using Daisy Parlour's “The Enterprise Incident” pattern (1) as a base for the shapes then did a lot of fittings. The metallic checkered fabric is from a store in the LA Fabric District and the red is cabaret from Spandex World (2) overlaid on black flannel (3) because I had it in my stash. The boots are women’s thigh-high riding boots from Poshmark and the belt is from Musician’s Belts (4).
